US to Cape Verde power adapters - do I need an adapter in Cape Verde?
What adapter do I need for Cape Verde?
You need to use a Type F power adapter for Cape Verde if your plug doesn't fit into a Cape Verdean power outlet.
The type of plug adapter, power converter or charger that's needed when visiting Cape Verde will all depend on the voltage and type of device that you're trying to use in a Cape Verdean power outlet. If you do not know what voltage your device uses then please read the section on how can you tell if you have a dual voltage or single voltage device before going any further.
- Expect frequent power blackouts and limited access to electricity in certain areas of Cape Verde, we suggest packing a power bank if you want to recharge your phone battery whilst in an area without access to electricity or during a power outage.
- If you're planning on visiting Cape Verde from America you will need to bring a suitable power adapter to fit a US plug in a Cape Verdean power outlet. Because the voltage is different in Cape Verde use a power converter if your device isn't dual voltage and check that it can work with a 50hz power outlet.
- If your device is 220 volts or is dual voltage and your plug fits in a Cape Verdean power outlet then you can use it in Cape Verde without needing a plug adapter.
- If your device can run on 220 volts or is dual voltage but the plug won't fit in a Cape Verdean power outlet you will need a suitable plug adapter for Cape Verde such a Type F power adapter. Note that a plug adapter for Cape Verde (or power adapter) is designed to change the actual shape of the plug on your device to fit into a plug outlet found in Cape Verde, but can't change the voltage from 220 volts to use with another voltage.
- If your device doesn't run on 220 volts and isn't dual voltage then you'll also need a power converter for Cape Verde to convert the voltage from 220 volts to the correct voltage for your device. You will still need to pack a suitable plug adapter for Cape Verde if your power converter doesn't use the correct Type F power adapter.
- If you simply want to power one or more USB devices such as a tablet or a cellphone then a USB travel power adapter will be ideal and it will work with any voltage, however make sure that you bring a USB travel adapter which includes a Type F power adapter otherwise you'll also need to use a suitable plug adapter for Cape Verde. Also known as: an electrical adapter, plug adapter, travel adapter, electrical adaptor, mains travel adapter or power adaptor. [5]
Does a power adapter change the voltage in Cape Verde?
A power adapter only adapts the shape of a plug to fit into a 220 volt Cape Verdean power outlet and is unable to convert the power to a higher voltage. If you need to safely use any 100, 110 or 120 volt device you also need to bring a step down power converter for Cape Verde along with the right power adapter.
Do I need a power adapter in Cape Verde?
If the type of Cape Verdean power outlet is different to the power outlet in your home country then you will need a power adapter.
Do I need a plug adapter for Cape Verde if I'm from the US?
If you are visiting from the US you will need to use a power adapter for Cape Verde because American plugs won't physically fit in a Cape Verdean power outlet, and because the voltage is different you will also need to use a power converter for Cape Verde if your appliance or charger isn't dual voltage which prevents damage or overheating.
What does a power adapter for a Cape Verdean power outlet do?
A power adapter for Cape Verde allows a visitor from a different location to use electrical appliances in Cape Verde by changing the shape of the plug to fit the power socket.
Where to buy a power adapter in Cape Verde
On arrival power adapters could be found in local electrical high street shops and drug stores, but always check the build quality first as safety standards might be different in a foreign country as this is important when dealing with electrical goods. Keep in mind that a shopping trip searching for power adapters in an unknown location might be impractical, especially as this needs to happen quickly before batteries run out.
Hotel receptions could have a power adapter for sale, hire or as a complimentary extra for guests; however, availability is normally limited and a hotel might not have the exact type required for your country. If in doubt, call ahead to the hotel first and request a reservation as it is unlikely that an adapter will be found in your room on arrival.
Where to buy a power adapter for Cape Verde in the US
Cape Verde to US power adapters will most likely be available in most major US International airports prior to departure, however the range of adapters might be limited to popular destinations. It is recommended to research the exact type of adapter required prior to shopping at the airport. Look in the travel accessories section of airport newsagents, electronic stores and pharmacists such as Hudson News or Brookstone, but expect to pay more than regular prices. Airports will be your last chance to buy a power adapter before departure, always check the returns policy to ensure you can easily exchange or refund a faulty or unsuitable product in an airside shop.
It will be more convenient and cheaper to buy the correct power adapter in advance of your trip. High street electrical stores such as Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Home Depot or Fry's normally sell a limited range of travel adapters to popular locations but for widest choice it is recommended to buy a power adapter online.

- A set includes Type A, B, C, D, E/F, G, H, I, J, L, M and N adapters so should operate in Cape Verde.
Disadvantages of a plug adapter set
- Not flexible - you'll have to decide which plug adapters to bring, or alternatively pack every power adapter type with you.
- Lots individual adapters to pack.
- Having only one functioning plug adapter being used in Cape Verde the remaining plug adapters will be redundant and using up space.
- Not every plug adapter types are typically included (and especially less common ones), so check that your set has one that is compatible in Cape Verde.
- Each plug adapter only modifies the shape of the plug but not the actual voltage. [9] [AD]
Voltage Converters
Benefits of a voltage converter
- A step down voltage converter allows travellers to use non-220 volt appliance with a Cape Verdean power outlet.
- A voltage converter has a surge protector, this will protect your electronics from being overpowered by the wrong voltage.
Disadvantages of a voltage converter
- A power converter only changes the 220 volts from a Cape Verdean power outlet and not the actual shape of the plug to slot in a Cape Verdean power outlet, therefore you'll still need to use the right type of plug adapter.
- The typical size of most models of voltage converters makes them unsuitable for carrying in hand baggage.
- An expensive converter will be useless when you return to America.
- Often better value and more practical to purchase a dual voltage travel appliance than to purchase a much more expensive voltage converter simply to power your existing single voltage appliance abroad.
- If you are travelling to Cape Verde from America you will need one as the voltage from a Cape Verdean power outlet is 220 volts.

Do US plugs work in Cape Verde?
No; an American plug won't work in Cape Verde because it doesn't fit into a Cape Verdean power outlet without using a plug adapter. The voltage is different therefore use a power converter for Cape Verde if your appliance or charger isn't dual voltage and check that your device or appliance will work with a 50hz power outlet.
Is the voltage in Cape Verde the same as in the US?
The voltage from a Cape Verdean power outlet is 220 volts, but 120 volts is used in the US. If your American power charger or appliance isn't dual voltage then you will need use a power converter for Cape Verde which can change the voltage from a 220-240 volt power outlet to 120 volts.
Is a Cape Verdean power outlet the same as in the US?
US plugs won't fit in a Cape Verdean power outlet therefore bring a plug adapter for Cape Verde. Both the voltage and frequency are different so if your charger or appliance isn't dual voltage please use a power converter for Cape Verde and ensure that it works with 50hz.
How do I use a 110 volt appliance in Cape Verde?
To use either a 110 volt or 120 volt appliance in a Cape Verdean power outlet you will need to bring a step down power converter.

Do I need a power bank for Cape Verde?
Because electric isn't available in all areas of Cape Verde alongside problems with the stability of electrical power, travellers should pack alternative charging solutions if they need to continue charging devices such as mobile phones or tablets.
- During a trip to Cape Verde increased use of cell phones for taking photos, storing itineraries, social networks, sat nav and staying entertained could syphon off power more excessively than normal. Beyond the simple missing photograph opportunities a flat cell phone battery could possibly leave you in an unknown location without enough power to make an emergency call or being able to use a satellite navigation app to return back to your hotel or accommodation. Using a 10,000mAh portable charger eases those concerns as it allows you to recharge your cell phone on the go, especially when visiting a country with a lack of access to electricity and power outages in some areas.
- Use at least a 10,000mAh portable charger which can supply enough power to cover over three full days of mobile phone use and a 20,000mAh power bank should keep an average mobile phone charged for around 7 days. A mAh value shows the capacity of a battery giving an indication of the number of recharges the power bank is capable of, and a higher rating is better for travellers.
- If you need to charge your laptop in Cape Verde and your laptop uses a USB-C charging port then use a portable charger for a laptop marked with PD (power delivery) which supplies 20 Wh or more. Please note that some airlines prohibit batteries on an aircraft that supply 100 Wh of power or more and must be kept in hand luggage only.
- Normal consumer portable chargers aren't powerful enough for use with high powered items, although a rechargeable hair dryer or rechargeable cordless flat iron can be used for travelling to areas with frequent power cuts and a lack of access to electricity such as Cape Verde. [12] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] [AD]
Do solar battery chargers work in Cape Verde?
The climate in Cape Verde will be adequate enough to charge solar power bank dependably, but needs to be exposed to strong sunshine in order to provide enough energy for a single charge. This may prove inconvenient to continually unpack a solar power bank then wait whilst it recharges in sunny spells.
- Instead, the larger solar panels found on a solar backpack will give the bag the ability to create more electricity within a faster period of time, meaning they should perform well in Cape Verde.
- Phones that are directly plugged into the USB port of a solar backpack will gradually top up the battery during sunny periods in Cape Verde, but this could be inconvenient to have it continuously tethered to the bag during the day should it be used constantly. Unlike a handheld solar power bank which requires unpacking facing the sunlight, a solar bag is more often exposed to light so can be recharging a regular power bank during the day.
- Even though the sunlight in Cape Verde is strong, a bag should have a solar cell efficiency of at least 22%, can generate at least 6 watts of power and be used with a 10,000mAH power bank or greater. Unlike normal firm solar cells, the flexible and durable cells used in solar powered bags have been designed to endure scratching and bending. Solar bags are found in rucksack, backpack and messenger styles which makes them ideal for travel, work and domestic use. [4] [17] [18] [AD]

Why use a travel USB charger for Cape Verde?
- Typically travel USB chargers include multiple USB charger ports, this means that you now only need to bring one charger to charge all your devices. It helps reduce the size and weight of your baggage by only packing one USB wall charger rather than needing to bring numerous individual USB chargers along.
- Most travel USB power chargers include swappable plug heads for various regions thereby making them ideal when travelling to other countries across Africa which are likely to use different standards to Cape Verde.
- A good USB charger is lightweight, compact and rugged - perfect for rigors of travel rather than risking bringing along a domestic charger which could be impossible to repair in Cape Verde.
- USB travel chargers will accept the 220 volts used in Cape Verde power outlets plus other voltage standards in other countries.
- There is a possibility that hotel bedrooms or accommodation in Cape Verde only have a single wall outlet, by bringing a travel charger with multiple USB ports means you can share the single wall outlet with family or other traveler instead of having to wait to recharge each device one by one.
- Due to their flexible nature a travel USB charger takes the uncertainty out of travelling to any unknown destination as they are guaranteed to work practically anywhere around the world.
- Power outlets found in airports are often scarce and the demand for charging multiple devices from other passengers during departure can be high, so a USB travel charger with multiple ports and the ability to charge quickly is perfect.
- Some countries power grids are unstable, a good quality travel charger allows for unexpected surges and prevents damage to any devices attached to it. Trying to repair an overloaded mobile phone or tablet in Cape Verde might prove to be inconvenient and expensive.
- Premium USB chargers should also include power outlet strips to allow you to plug in low wattage devices such as laptops, but note these are unsuitable for high powered appliances such as hair dryers or clothes irons. Read our section on using travel appliances with a Cape Verdean power outlet for advice on the most suitable power adapter to use with a Cape Verdean power outlet for high powered appliances.
- Certain tablets and cell phones could pull more than the normal 500 mA (milliamps) supplied by a normal 5 volt USB power adapter to charge or provide fast charge. Ensure that the USB power adapter can support fast charging should some of your devices need additional power.
- Travel USB chargers can still be useful when returning home by charging multiple cell phones every night using a single power outlet. [6] [AD]

Power converters for Cape Verde
What is a power converter for a Cape Verdean power outlet?
Power converters for Cape Verde allow travellers to use a 100-120 volt electrical device with a 220 volt Cape Verdean power outlet.
Also known as: electrical converter, electrical transformer, voltage converter, power transformer or voltage transformer.
What is the difference between a plug adapter and a power converter for Cape Verde?
A small, cheap and lightweight power adapter (or plug adapter) changes the shape of the plug on your device to fit into a power outlet in Cape Verde, however a heavier and more expensive power converter converts a 220 volt Cape Verdean power outlet to work with a non-220 volt appliance. [10] [AD]
Do I need a power converter for Cape Verde?
When you are travelling to Cape Verde from another country make sure the device can be used with a 220 volt power supply.
- A step down power converter is needed if you are visiting Cape Verde from a country that uses 100-120 volts and your device or appliance doesn't support 220 volts. See our WikiConnections world power outlets page to find out which voltage is used in your country.
- You won't need a power converter if you already use either a single voltage appliance that works with 220 volts or one that is dual voltage.
- Typically, devices designed to use a lower voltage such as 110 volts and used in a 220 volt power outlet run the risk of blowing a fuse, damage to your device or even an electrical fire hazard unless a step down power converter is used.
- You don't need a converter if you are attempting to power a smaller electrical device such as a laptop as these are normally designed for international use and dual voltage, however you should always check the device for dual voltage support first.
- For supplying power to high wattage appliances or generate heat (for example hair straighteners and curling irons) then you will need to use a bulkier higher wattage heavy duty power converter.
- It might be more cost effective to purchase a robust lightweight dual voltage travel appliance than carrying a much heavier power converter to Cape Verde just to use your existing domestic appliance.
- Read our comprehensive guides on how to use clothes irons, curling irons, hair straighteners and hair dryers in Cape Verdean power outlets , along with recommendations on some affordable dual voltage alternatives. [10] [19] [AD]
Will I need a power converter for Cape Verde if I'm from America?
The 220 volts used in a plug outlet in Cape Verde is different to a US outlet, therefore please use a step down power converter if your appliance or charger isn't dual voltage. [10] [AD]
What kind of converter do I need for Cape Verde?
You need to buy a step down power converter in order to use any 100, 110 or 120 volt appliance in Cape Verde. [10] [AD]
What is the difference between a power converter and a power transformer?
Converters and transformers are both used to change one voltage to another, but this ambiguity can cause confusion as their purposes are different:
- Power converters are designed for simple electrical appliances which typically generate heat or use motors such as clothes irons, shavers or hair dryers. Transformers are designed for more complex electronic items such as televisions or games consoles.
- Buying a power converter is cheaper than buying a power transformer.
- Power transformers are larger and heavier making them more suited for permanent residential use; for example an expat wishing to use an imported television would need to use a transformer for this purpose.
- Power converters are more suitable for travellers wishing to bring domestic appliances abroad such as hair dryers or flat irons. However, it is more practical and cost effective to purchase a dual voltage appliance designed for travel rather than a heavier power converter.
- Power converters are suitable for 2 pin ungrounded appliances, it could be harder to find a converter if you want to use a grounded 3 pin appliance.
- Transformers can be used constantly however it is recommended that converters are used for no longer than a couple of hours at a time.
- Shops may sell transformers under the name of converters, for the purposes this guide we will be referring to both converters and transformers as converters.
How to convert 220 volts to 110 volts
- Use a step down power converter to allow you to use a 110 or 120 volt appliance with a 220 volt Cape Verdean power outlet.
- If the power converter doesn't include the correct shaped plug then it will also be necessary to plug in the power cord from the power converter into a power adapter for Cape Verde before plugging that into a Cape Verdean power outlet.
- Some power converters include the ability to perform both step up and step down voltage conversions, therefore it may be necessary to manually switch the converter to output the voltage to the 110-120 volt range.
- Plug your appliance into the converter and turn the power on, your 110-120 volt appliance can now be used with a 220 volt Cape Verdean power outlet. [10] [AD]
What voltage does Cape Verde use?
Cape Verde uses 220 volts in their power outlets. [2]
How to tell the voltage of your device
The easiest way to tell if a device is either single or dual voltage is to check for numbers printed on the supplied power adapter, or on the unit itself, typically on the rear or near to where the power cord sits. The location might vary depending on the make or model of your device but should also be written on the box.
- Single voltage devices could say a specific number - such as 240V.
- Single voltage devices could also say a small voltage range (20 volts difference) with a dash to accomodate small voltage fluctuations - such as 100-120V.
- Dual voltage devices will typically say a larger voltage range separated with a slash - such as 100/240V.
Substantiations
See the power adapter substantions section for more information on how we compared travel adapters.

- When you only want to bring along just USB powered devices then a travel USB wall charger is ideal because you will only need to pack that single compact charger with appropriate existing charging cables rather than having to pack numerous domestic chargers.
- A travel power strip is built for powering and voltage conversion for several low wattage devices of any voltage, but won't work with high wattage appliances which require voltage conversion.
Will your devices and appliances work with a 220 volt power outlet?
- Cape Verde uses 220 volts, should you travel from a country which isn't 220 volts and you're not using a dual voltage appliance (how you can tell) then you will either need to bring a heavy power converter or a lighter power strip with a built in voltage converter.
- It might be more expensive buying a voltage converter instead of buying a dedicated dual voltage travel appliance (such as a dual voltage hair dryer, clothes iron, curling iron or hair straighteners for Cape Verde) which is ideal for travel and often includes an assortment of plug adapters.
Are you only charging USB devices?
- Should you only plan on bringing USB powered electronics such as phones to use in Cape Verde then it is recommended to just pack a travel USB wall charger.
- If you only use a simple power plug adapter in Cape Verde you'll still need to bring the USB power charger that came with your device as well. [6] [AD]
Is Cape Verde the only location you intend on visiting?
- A single plug adapter only operates in the one country which it is made for, so if you plan on visiting multiple countries then you may need to pack additional plug adapters which in turn adds to the weight you'll have to bring.
- However, universal travel adapters and travel USB wall chargers are designed for visiting multiple countries due to their interchangeable head system.
How many Cape Verdean power outlets are available?
- A hotel may only have a single power outlet on the wall. This will be an inconvenience when charging up the batteries of multiple electronic items such as tablets, mobile phones or laptops overnight as you'll only be able to charge a single device at a time.
- Should you want to charge more than one device simultaneously then we suggest using either a USB wall charger or a travel power strip which can charge multiple USB ports and power outlets. [7] [AD]
What is your budget?
- A basic power adapter which charges only one device from a Cape Verdean power outlet (provided that it is dual voltage or works with 220 volts) however paying a little more will allow you to power multiple devices at once and be able to bring them to multiple different countries.
Do you plan to visit elsewhere in the future?
- A USB charger with interchangeable heads or versatile universal travel adapter can potentially be reused for future trips for other countries as well as Cape Verde.
Do you intend to bring hand luggage to Cape Verde?
- Because of the larger weight both travel power strips and most models of power converters are too heavy for carry-on baggage, consider bringing a lightweight universal power adapter or USB wall charger. [8] [AD]
Will it take you a long time to get to Cape Verde?
- For much longer journeys consider a convenient airport-friendly charger that can be used with different power outlet types, one that is small enough to pack in carry-on luggage and can be used to quickly charge tablets and phones.
- Not all airlines and airports actually have power outlets so consider using a travel portable power bank which will recharge on the go. After arriving you could have to use a cell phone for making calls, using sat nav to locate your hotel or recalling itineraries; therefore it is recommended that your phone will have ample charge left. [4] [AD]
Do you still need use your charger when returning to America?
- Some types of travel USB wall chargers and travel power strips should still be useful when you return to America (should they include a domestic plug for your home country).
Will the area of Cape Verde you are visiting have good access to electricity?
- The power will sometimes fluctuate in Cape Verde and this could potentially cause damage to your devices, it is advisable to look for an adapter which has surge protection built in such as a travel power strip.
- Due to Cape Verde having power cuts and having partial coverage of power in some areas you might discover that whatever power charger you use doesn't function anyway. Using a portable power bank or a solar backpack will prepare you for areas of limited electricity or any power cuts in Cape Verde. [4] [4] [17] [AD]
