US to Norway power adapters - do you need a plug adapter in Norway?
What adapter do I need for Norway?
You'll need to bring a Type F power adapter to Norway if the plug you intend on using doesn't fit in a Norwegian power outlet.
The type of plug adapter, converter or charger that's needed when visiting Norway all depends on the voltage and type of device that you're trying to use in a Norwegian power outlet. If you don't know what voltage your device can use then please read the section below on how can you tell if you have a dual voltage device first.
- If you are visiting Norway from the US then you will need to use a suitable power adapter to fit a US plug into a Norwegian power outlet. Because the voltage is different in Norway you will also need to bring a power converter for Norway if your device isn't dual voltage and ensure that it can work with a 50hz power outlet.
- If your device is 240 volts or is dual voltage and the plug can fit in a Norwegian power outlet then you can use it in Norway.
- If your device can run on 240 volts or is dual voltage but the plug won't fit in a Norwegian power outlet then you will need a suitable plug adapter for Norway such a Type F power adapter. A plug adapter for Norway (or power adapter) will change the actual shape of the plug on your device to fit into a plug outlet found in Norway, but won't change the voltage from 240 volts to another voltage.
- If your device can't run on 240 volts and isn't dual voltage then you'll also need a power converter for Norway to convert the voltage from 240 volts to the correct voltage on your device. You will still need to use a suitable plug adapter for Norway if the power converter doesn't include the correct Type F power adapter.
- If you simply want to power one or more USB devices such as a tablet or a mobile phone then a USB travel power adapter is recommended and it will work with any voltage, however ensure that you bring a USB travel adapter which has a Type F power adapter otherwise you'll still need to bring along a suitable plug adapter for Norway. [4] [AD]
- An increase in use of a phone during a trip to Norway can leave you with a flat battery quickly therefore you should pack a portable power bank if you want to recharge your mobile phone whilst travelling to an unknown location.

A power adapter for Norway is a small and cheap plastic adapter which permits a Norwegian power outlet to accept a different type of power plug from an appliance from another region.
Also known as: an electrical adapter, plug adapter, travel adapter, electrical adaptor, mains travel adapter or power adaptor. [10]
Does a power adapter change the voltage from a Norwegian power outlet?
A power adapter only adapts the shape of a plug to fit into a 240 volt Norwegian power outlet and can't convert the power to a higher voltage. Should you wish to safely use a 100, 110 or 120 volt appliance you will also need a step down power converter along with the right type of power adapter.
Will I need a plug adapter for Norway if I'm visiting from the US?
If you are visiting from America use a plug adapter for Norway because a US plug won't physically fit in a Norwegian power outlet, and as the voltage is 240 volts you will also need to use a power converter for Norway to prevent overheating or damage to your appliance or device if it isn't dual voltage.
What does a power adapter for Norway do?
A power adapter allows a visitor travelling from another location to use their own electronic and electrical devices in Norway by adapting the shape of the power plug to fit the power outlet.
Where to buy a power adapter in Norway
On arrival power adapters could be found in local electrical high street shops and drug stores, but always check the build quality first as safety standards might be different in a foreign country as this is important when dealing with electrical goods. Keep in mind that a shopping trip searching for power adapters in an unknown location might be impractical, especially as this needs to happen quickly before batteries run out.
Hotel receptions could have a power adapter for sale, hire or as a complimentary extra for guests; however, availability is normally limited and a hotel might not have the exact type required for your country. If in doubt, call ahead to the hotel first and request a reservation as it is unlikely that an adapter will be found in your room on arrival.
Where to buy a power adapter for Norway in the US
Norway to US power adapters will most likely be available in most major US International airports prior to departure, however the range of adapters might be limited to popular destinations. It is recommended to research the exact type of adapter required prior to shopping at the airport. Look in the travel accessories section of airport newsagents, electronic stores and pharmacists such as Hudson News or Brookstone, but expect to pay more than regular prices. Airports will be your last chance to buy a power adapter before departure, always check the returns policy to ensure you can easily exchange or refund a faulty or unsuitable product in an airside shop.
It will be more convenient and cheaper to buy the correct power adapter in advance of your trip. High street electrical stores such as Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Home Depot or Fry's normally sell a limited range of travel adapters to popular locations but for widest choice it is recommended to buy a power adapter online.

What plug sockets are used in Norway?
There are two different types of power supply used in Norway, these are type F and C with the primary power supply being type F:
- Plug Type C - You can recognise the power outlet by 2 round holes adjacent to each other.
- Plug Type F - You can identify the plug socket by the two holes 19 mm apart from each other for live and neutral, plus a pair of two grounding clips on the top and bottom. [4] [AD]
Do US plugs work in Norway?
No; a US plug won't work in Norway because it can't fit into a Norwegian power outlet without using a power adapter. The voltage is different therefore please use a power converter for Norway if your appliance or charger isn't dual voltage and check that your device or appliance is compatible with a 50hz power outlet.
Is the voltage in Norway the same as the US?
The voltage in Norway is 240 volts, however Americans use 120 volts. If your US appliance or charger doesn't support dual voltage then you will need use a suitable power converter for a Norwegian power outlet which allows a 120 volt American appliance to work in a 220-240 volt outlet.
Is an electrical outlet in Norway the same as the US?
American plugs won't fit in a Norwegian power outlet so you will need to bring a plug adapter for Norway. Both the voltage and frequency are different so if your appliance or charger isn't dual voltage you will need to use a power converter for Norway and ensure that it works with 50hz.
How do I use a 110 volt appliance in Norway?
To use a 110V appliance in a Norwegian power outlet you need a step down power converter.
What is the frequency used in Norway?
The frequency of the current from a Norwegian power outlet is 50Hz. [15]
Does a European plug fit in a Norwegian power outlet?
Different locations throughout Europe all use different standards of power outlet types and voltages, so a plug that works with a Norwegian power outlet might not work in another location. If you intend on travelling to more than one destination in Europe you should either use a multiple power adapter travel set containing various types of power adapters, or a smaller single international travel plug adapter as both these options make sure you're covered for all different power outlet types which you may find. Before travelling check this list of power outlets used in Europe to understand which power adapters and converters you will need to bring during your trip. [13] [13] [16] [AD]
Should I bring a power bank to Norway?
Even though electrical failures aren't common with power being available throughout the country, travellers are still recommended to bring a power bank to recharge mobiles.
- With some being offline can cause mild stress, especially when being relied upon abroad. During a trip to Norway increased use of mobile phones for taking photographs, storing itineraries, social networks, getting directions and streaming videos will drain the batteries more excessively than normal. Beyond the inconvenience of missing photograph opportunities this can potentially leave you without enough power to make emergency calls or being able to use a sat nav app to find your way back to hotel or accommodation.
- Bringing along a power bank lowers the risk as it allows you to recharge your smart phone without using a Norwegian power outlet.
- Look for at least a 10,000mAh portable charger which can store enough energy to cover over three full days of mobile phone use while a 20,000mAh power bank should keep a typical mobile phone powered for up to seven days depending on the model of phone and usage. The mAh rating describes the capacity of the battery giving an indication of the number of charge cycles the portable charger is capable of.
- Providing that your laptop supports USB-C charging then a portable charger for a laptop marked with PD (power delivery) which supplies at least 20Wh can be used to extend the battery life of the laptop. However be aware that some airlines don't allow you bring power banks on an aircraft with more than 100 Wh of power and must not be kept in the hold so we recommended checking ahead with the airline first.
- Consumer portable chargers won't work with high powered items that generate heat, but a rechargeable hair dryer or rechargeable cordless flat iron are ideal for travelling. [9] [17] [18] [19] [20] [21] [AD]
Will a solar charger work in Norway?
Typical solar power banks can slowly recharge up in direct sunlight, but due to the sunlight in Norway and the limitation of the size of the solar cells it won't be dependable enough for visitors. Due to their compact surface area a solar charger will need to be left in strong sunshine for long periods of time in order to produce enough power for a single charge cycle, and this might prove difficult to continually unpack a solar power bank then wait whilst it recharges between cloud cover.
- Instead, the larger panels found on a solar backpack will give the backpack the ability to create more electricity within a shorter period of time.
- Phones that have been plugged directly into a USB port of a solar backpack can gradually recharge the battery during sunny periods in Norway, but could prove inconvenient to have a phone continually connected to the bag if it is to be needed constantly. So it is recommended to plug in a normal power bank to a solar backpack which can then be constantly topped up during the day, afterwards the phone can be powered up using the power bank without daylight.
- Because of the climate in Norway a bag should have the very minimum solar cell efficiency of at least 22%, be able to generate at least 6 watts of power and includes a power bank of 10,000mAH or greater.
- Solar bags are available in rucksack, backpack and laptop messenger styles which makes them perfect for domestic, travel and work.
- The durable and flexible panels used in solar powered bags are built to endure scratching and bending, unlike regular rigid solar cells. [9] [22] [23] [AD]

Power converters for Norway
What is a power converter for a Norwegian power outlet?
A power converter enables travellers to use a 100-120 volt electric device with a 240 volt Norwegian power outlet.
Also known as: electrical converter, electrical transformer, voltage converter, power transformer or voltage transformer.
What is the difference between a power converter and a power adapter for Norway?
An expensive and heavy power converter converts a 240 volt Norwegian power outlet to work with a non-240 volt appliance, whereas a more lightweight and smaller power adapter (or plug adapter) will change the shape of the plug on your device to fit into a power outlet found in Norway. [14] [AD]
Do I need a power converter for Norway?
When you are visiting Norway from a different region please ensure the device can be charged using a 240 volt power supply.
- A step down power converter is needed if you are travelling to Norway from a country that uses 100-120 volts and your device or appliance won't support 240 volts. Read our WikiConnections world power outlets guide to discover which voltage your country uses.
- You shouldn't need a power converter if you are already using either a single voltage device that works with 240 volts or one that is dual voltage.
- Devices designed to use a lower voltage (such as 110 volts) and used in a 240 volt outlet run the risk of an electrical fire hazard, a blown fuse or damage to your device.
- You won't need a converter if you need to charge a smaller electrical device such as a mobile phone or laptop as these are normally designed for international use and dual voltage, however you should always always check the device for dual voltage support first.
- For supplying power to appliances which draw more power or generate heat (for example clothes irons and hair dryers) then you will need to use a more expensive higher wattage heavy duty power converter.
- Buying a smaller robust dual voltage travel appliance could be more practical and cost effective than bringing a much heavier power converter just to use your existing domestic appliance.
- For more information read these comprehensive travel guides on using curling wands, clothes irons, hair straighteners and hair dryers in Norway , along with guides for some affordable dual voltage alternatives. [6] [14] [AD]
Do I need a power converter for Norway if I'm from the US?
The voltage from a power outlet in Norway is different to an American outlet so please bring a step down power converter if your appliance or charger isn't dual voltage. [14] [AD]
What converter do I need for Norway?
You will need to use a step down power converter in order to use any 100-120 volt appliance in a 240 volt Norwegian power outlet. [14] [AD]
What is the difference between a transformer and a converter?
Converters and transformers are both used to change one voltage to another, but this ambiguity can cause confusion as their purposes are different:
- Power converters are designed for simple electrical appliances which typically generate heat or use motors such as clothes irons, shavers or hair dryers. Transformers are designed for more complex electronic items such as televisions or games consoles.
- Buying a power converter is cheaper than buying a power transformer.
- Power transformers are larger and heavier making them more suited for permanent residential use; for example an expat wishing to use an imported television would need to use a transformer for this purpose.
- Power converters are more suitable for travellers wishing to bring domestic appliances abroad such as hair dryers or flat irons. However, it is more practical and cost effective to purchase a dual voltage appliance designed for travel rather than a heavier power converter.
- Power converters are suitable for 2 pin ungrounded appliances, it could be harder to find a converter if you want to use a grounded 3 pin appliance.
- Transformers can be used constantly however it is recommended that converters are used for no longer than a couple of hours at a time.
- Shops may sell transformers under the name of converters, for the purposes this guide we will be referring to both converters and transformers as converters.
How to convert 240 volts to 110 volts
- Use a step down power converter to allow you to use a 110 or 120 volt appliance with a 240 volt Norwegian power outlet.
- If the power converter doesn't include the correct shaped plug then it will also be necessary to plug in the power cord from the power converter into a power adapter for Norway before plugging that into a Norwegian power outlet.
- Some power converters include the ability to perform both step up and step down voltage conversions, therefore it may be necessary to manually switch the converter to output the voltage to the 110-120 volt range.
- Plug your appliance into the converter and turn the power on, your 110-120 volt appliance can now be used with a 240 volt Norwegian power outlet. [14] [AD]
What voltage is used in Norway?
Norway uses 240 volts in their normal power outlets. [8]
What voltage is my appliance?
The best method to tell if your device is dual voltage is to look for a sticker on the supplied charger or on the unit itself, typically on the rear or near to where the power cord goes. This location might depend on the make or model of your unit but could also be written on the box or in the instruction manual.
- Single voltage devices might have a specific number - such as 240V.
- Single voltage devices could also have a small voltage range (around 20 volts) with a dash to accomodate small voltage fluctuations - such as 100-120V.
- Dual voltage devices will say a large voltage range separated with a slash - such as 100/240V.
Substantiations
See the power adapter substantions section for more information on how we compared travel adapters.
What type of adapter do you need for Norway?
Which type of plug adapter do you need for Norway?
The power converter or plug adapter which is suitable for Norway depends on various requirements. Prior to deciding which one to bring we suggest using the following checklist:
How many electrical items will you be taking to Norway?
- List how many items you want to bring to Norway (including phones, laptops, eReaders, hair straighteners or clothes irons).
- Remember to take into account that you might own more electrical devices in the future. Do you intend on buying a new tablet computer next year for example?
- There is a growing number of rechargeable devices such as electric shavers that use a USB port for their power source. Therefore next time you buy a new device it could need a USB power adapter so remember to check that your travel adapter has enough spare ports to support these too.
- Will you be travelling with a partner who might need to charge their iPads too?
What different types of electrical items do you need to use in Norway?
- There are 3 types of electrical devices or appliances:
- Low wattage electrical devices which can be plugged into a power outlet - for example cameras and laptops.
- High wattage appliances that can be plugged into a power outlet - for example clothes irons and hair dryers.
- USB powered electrical devices which plug into a USB port - for example cellphones.
- If you only have to bring along just USB powered devices to Norway then you'll find that a travel USB charger is ideal as you will only have to pack one compact charger plus your charging cables.
- Travel power strips are built for providing power and voltage conversion for many low wattage devices of any voltage, however unsuitable for high wattage appliances (such as clothes irons) which need voltage conversion.
Will you only be charging USB devices in Norway?
- Should you only plan on packing devices such as phones or tablets to use in Norway then we suggest just packing a travel USB wall charger.
- If you only use a simple power plug adapter you will still need to bring the USB power charger that was supplied with your device too. [2] [AD]
Will your devices and appliances only work with a 240 volt power outlet?
- Norway uses 240 volts, should you come from a country that doesn't use 240 volts and you don't have a dual voltage appliance (how you can tell) then you'll either need to use a heavy voltage converter or a lighter power strip with a built in power converter.
- It can be more expensive buying a voltage converter rather than using a dedicated dual voltage travel appliance (such as a dual voltage clothes iron, hair dryer, curling iron or hair straighteners for Norway) which is perfect for travel and often includes an assortment of plug adapters.
Does your trip include visits to countries other than Norway?
- Most single plug adapters typically only operate in a single country, so if you plan on visiting multiple countries then you may need to bring additional power adapters.
- On the other hand universal travel adapters and travel USB wall chargers are perfect for travelling to multiple countries due to their interchangeable head system.
How many wall outlets are available in Norway?
- The accommodation in Norway may have only a single power outlet, this will present an inconvenience if charging up multiple electronic devices such as phones, tablet computers and cameras overnight as you will only be able to recharge a single device at a time every few hours.
- Should you wish to recharge multiple devices simultaneously then we recommend packing either a travel power strip or USB wall charger which are capable of charging multiple USB ports and outlets. [11] [AD]
What is your budget?
- A cheap power adapter which charges a single device from a Norwegian power outlet (provided that it is dual voltage or is compatible with 240 volts), however investing in a little more allows you to charge more than one device at once and be able to bring them to various countries.
Are you planning to visit anywhere abroad in the future?
- A USB wall charger with interchangeable heads or universal travel adapter can be reused for other trips in the future for other countries as well as Norway.
Do you bringing just hand luggage to Norway?
- Due to their larger weight and size both power strips and power converters can be way too bulky and heavy for hand luggage, we recommend bringing either a USB wall charger or a universal power adapter instead. [12] [AD]
Will it take you a long time to fly to Norway?
- If you're taking an extended flight to get to Norway think about an appropriate airport-friendly power charger that works in different outlet types, one that can be carried in hand luggage and can be used to quickly top up phones and tablets prior to a long haul journey.
- As not all planes and airports have power outlets please think about bringing a battery portable power bank for recharging on the go. When you land you could have to rely on a mobile phone for making calls, sending texts, using mapping or recalling an itinerary; therefore it is recommended that your phone has ample power left. [9] [AD]
Would you like to use your charger when returning to America?
- Some types of travel USB wall chargers and travel power strips might also function when you return to America (if they also include a domestic plug for your home country).
Will you always have good access to electricity?
- Power in Norway is generally stable but if you want to visit other countries you might need a power adapter to protect your electrical devices. The power might occasionally fluctuate in some regions and this might cause damage to your devices, use a power adapter which has surge protection built in such as a travel power strip.
- Prepare for countries with limited electricity and power cuts by bringing a portable power bank and a solar backpack. [9] [9] [22] [AD]
