US to Paraguay power adapters - do you need to bring a power adapter for Paraguay?

Paraguayan power outlet

What adapter do I need for Paraguay?

You need to pack a Type C plug adapter for Paraguay if the plug you intend on using doesn't fit in a Paraguayan power outlet.

The type of plug adapter, power converter or charger that you'll need to bring when visiting Paraguay all depend on the voltage and type of device that you're trying to power with a Paraguayan power outlet. If you're unsure of which voltage your device can use then please read the section below on how can you tell if you have a dual voltage device first.

  • Some areas of Paraguay do not have access to power and suffer from regular power blackouts, it is advised to pack a portable charger if you want to recharge your mobile phone whilst staying in an area without electricity or during a power outage.
  • If you are from America and travelling to Paraguay you will need to bring a suitable plug adapter for Paraguay to fit a US plug into a Paraguayan power outlet. Because the voltage is different in Paraguay use a power converter for Paraguay if your device isn't dual voltage and ensure that it is compatible with a 50hz power outlet.
  • If your device can run on 220 volts or is dual voltage and your plug can fit in a Paraguayan power outlet then it can work in Paraguay.
  • If your device can run on 220 volts or is dual voltage but your plug won't fit in a Paraguayan power outlet then you will need a suitable plug adapter for Paraguay such a Type C plug adapter. A plug adapter for Paraguay (or power adapter) is designed to change the shape of the plug on your device to fit into a plug outlet found in Paraguay, but isn't designed to convert the voltage from 220 volts to a different voltage.
  • If your device doesn't run on 220 volts and isn't dual voltage then you'll also need a power converter for Paraguay to convert the voltage from 220 volts to the correct voltage on your device. You'll still need to pack a suitable plug adapter for Paraguay if your power converter doesn't have the correct Type C plug adapter.
  • If you only need to power one or more USB devices such as a tablet or a mobile phone then a USB travel power adapter will be more suited and it should be dual voltage, but make sure that you choose to bring one which has a Type C plug adapter otherwise you'll still need to bring along a suitable plug adapter for Paraguay[3] [AD]

Warning: If your device won't handle the 220 volts used in Paraguay you run a risk of an electrical fire hazard, blowing a fuse or damage to your device. Prior to using your device in Paraguay read the instruction manual first to ensure safe operation.

What is the best power adapter for Paraguay?

What is a power adapter for a Paraguayan power outlet?

Power adapters are compact and cheap plastic adapters that allow a different type of power plug from a foreign region to easily fit into a power socket in Paraguay. [5]

Will a power adapter convert the voltage from a Paraguayan power outlet?

A power adapter only adapts the shape of a plug to fit into a 220 volt Paraguayan power outlet and can't convert to a different voltage. If you need to safely use any 100-120 volt appliance you also need to bring a more expensive step down power converter for Paraguay.

Do I need a plug adapter in Paraguay?

It will depend on where you are travelling from and the type of plug you wish to use in Paraguay.

Do I need a power adapter for Paraguay if I'm visiting from the US?

What does a power adapter do?

A power adapter for Paraguay enables visitors from a different location to use their electronic appliances in Paraguay by altering the shape of the power plug.

Where to buy a power adapter for Paraguay in the US

Power adapters for sale in an airport

Where to buy a power adapter for Paraguay in the US

Paraguay to US power adapters will most likely be available in most major US International airports prior to departure, however the range of adapters might be limited to popular destinations. It is recommended to research the exact type of adapter required prior to shopping at the airport. Look in the travel accessories section of airport newsagents, electronic stores and pharmacists such as Hudson News or Brookstone, but expect to pay more than regular prices. Airports will be your last chance to buy a power adapter before departure, always check the returns policy to ensure you can easily exchange or refund a faulty or unsuitable product in an airside shop.

It will be more convenient and cheaper to buy the correct power adapter in advance of your trip. High street electrical stores such as Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Home Depot or Fry's normally sell a limited range of travel adapters to popular locations but for widest choice it is recommended to buy a power adapter online.

Power Plug Adapters

Benefits of a power plug adapter

  • Straightforward design makes this plug adapter easy to operate.
  • Light and compact.
  • Affordable.
  • Bringing a Type C plug adapter will be ideal for Paraguay.

Disadvantages of a power plug adapter

  • Some hotel rooms in Paraguay might only have one wall outlet, therefore you will only be able to power one appliance at once.
  • Should you plan to visit more than one country then you might need to bring more than one type of plug adapter for other countries.
  • Only alters the actual shape of the plug to fit in a Type C Paraguayan power outlet but not the voltage, if your appliance doesn't work with a 220 volt outlet and isn't dual voltage you will also need to pack a voltage converter.
  • You'll also still need to pack your separate USB charger if you wish to power any USB device.
  • Only 1 adapter for each device - for every individual appliance you wish to bring you'll also need to pack a separate adapter. [3] [AD]
Travel USB Wall Chargers

A travel USB wall charger

Travel USB Wall Chargers

Benefits of a travel USB wall charger

  • Ideal for situations when you only need to power devices which are USB powered.
  • You only have to bring one unit rather than carry lots of domestic USB power chargers.
  • Chargers are typically supplied with swappable adapter heads making them versatile in a large number of different countries. The interchangeable adapter heads are usually lightweight and small which makes them easy to pack.
  • Has surge protection.
  • It can still be of use in your home country.

Disadvantages of a travel USB wall charger

  • The interchangeable heads don't include one which is compatible with a Paraguayan power outlet - therefore you'll still need to bring a separate power adapter.
  • They only have USB ports so you can't power any electrical appliances, only USB ones. [6] [AD]
Travel Power Strips

Travel power strip including plug adapters

Travel Power Strips

Benefits of a travel power strip

  • Certain models of power strips offer voltage conversation for lower wattage devices. So even if your appliance isn't dual voltage it should still function with a Paraguayan power outlet by using a travel power strip, making them a cheaper lightweight substitute for a voltage converter.
  • A travel power strip is able to charge many electronic devices and appliances at once from only one Paraguayan power outlet.
  • Normal modern travel power strips include a number of USB charging ports.
  • Offers surge protection. The voltage from power grids in some areas might be tempremental, a surge in power will damage your delicate electrical items. There are some travel power strips that include a surge protector to protect any device from being overloaded by an unstable power grid.
  • When you return home it should still be of use as a USB charger and power strip.

Disadvantages of a travel power strip

  • It doesn't include a specific plug adapter for Paraguay so you need to also bring a separate power adapter for a Paraguayan power outlet.
  • The conversion on travel power strips doesn't work with higher wattage appliances such as curling irons and hair dryers.
  • Because of the size of a power strip it might be too heavy for carrying in hand luggage.
  • A travel power strip could be excessive for travellers with only a small number of appliances to power. [7] [AD]
Universal Travel Power Adapters

A universal travel adapter

Universal Travel Power Adapters

Benefits of a universal travel power adapter

  • Straightforward operation.
  • An all-in-one design. Both small and lightweight.
  • There are some universal travel power adapters that include a surge protector to protect any device from being overloaded by an unstable power grid in some countries.
  • The retracting pins don't catch against other items when packed in your luggage.
  • When you return home the universal travel power adapter could still work as a USB charger.
  • There are some models which include multiple USB charging ports.

Disadvantages of a universal travel power adapter

  • Because universal travel adapters only work with fit A/B, E/F, G and I power outlets they won't work in Paraguay. So you will need to plug a universal travel adapter into a separate power plug adapter for Paraguay if you want to use universal travel adapter to benefit from surge protection and powering multiple devices from a single outlet.
  • Universal travel power adapters will overload when used with any high power appliances; for example clothes irons, hair straighteners, microwaves, kettles or hair dryers.
  • Missing a built in power converter means it won't be suitable for non-220 volt electrical appliances.
  • A universal travel power adapter might not be fully universal; some models might not cover some countries with less popular power outlets.
  • Pins and internal moving parts could be fragile on some models which could make them likely to possibily jam on your trip.
  • Can only charge one appliance. [8] [AD]
Plug Adapter Sets

A plug adapter set

Plug Adapter Sets

Benefits of a plug adapter set

  • An adapter set will typically work out more reasonable than buying multiple individual power plug adapter types.
  • Ensures that you are covered for all power outlet types and not just a Paraguayan power outlet.
  • Suitable for travellers travelling to multiple locations.
  • Each set includes Type A, B, C, D, E/F, G, H, I, J, L, M and N plugs so should be compatible with a Paraguayan power outlet.

Disadvantages of a plug adapter set

  • Involves planning - you will need to choose which power adapters to bring, if you don't know every country you'll be visiting you'll need to pack each power adapter in the set with you.
  • Means lots of individual adapters to bring with you.
  • The remaining power adapters will be useless.
  • Not all power adapter types are typically included (especially rarer ones) - so ensure that your set has an adapter which works in Paraguay.
  • Each adapter only changes the shape of the plug but doesn't modify the actual voltage. [9] [AD]
Voltage Converters

Larger voltage converters

Voltage Converters

Benefits of a voltage converter

Disadvantages of a voltage converter

  • It only changes the 220 volts from a Paraguayan power outlet and not the shape of the plug to fit into a Paraguayan power outlet, therefore you will still need to pack the right type of plug adapter for Paraguay.
  • The normal weight of voltage converters makes them impractical for packing in hand luggage.
  • A voltage converter won't be of any use after your trip to Paraguay.
  • Often better value and more practical to buy a dual voltage travel appliance than to buy a more expensive voltage converter just in order to power your existing single voltage appliance abroad.
  • If you are travelling to Paraguay from the US then you will require one as the voltage from a Paraguayan power outlet is 220 volts.

What plug sockets are used in Paraguay?

Do US plugs work in Paraguay?

No - an American plug won't work in Paraguay because it can't fit in a Paraguayan power outlet without the use of a plug adapter. The voltage is 220 volts so please use a power converter for Paraguay if your device or appliance isn't dual voltage and check that your device or appliance is compatible with a 50hz power outlet.

Is the voltage in Paraguay the same as the US?

The voltage from a Paraguayan power outlet is 220 volts, whereas 120 volts is used in America. If your American charger or appliance won't handle dual voltage then you will need use a suitable power converter for a Paraguayan power outlet which can lower the voltage from 220 volts to 120 volts.

Is an outlet in Paraguay the same as in the US?

American plugs won't fit in a Paraguayan power outlet so you will need to bring a plug adapter for Paraguay. Both the voltage and frequency are different so if your charger or appliance isn't dual voltage use a power converter for Paraguay and ensure that it works with a 50hz power outlet.

How do I use a 110 volt appliance in Paraguay?

To use a 110V or 120V appliance in a Paraguayan power outlet you need to bring a step down power converter.

Do I need a power bank for Paraguay?

As the power grid isn't available in all areas of Paraguay alongside problems with the reliability of the power grid, travellers are advised to bring backup charging solutions if they wish to continue using devices such as cellphones or cameras.

  • Whilst travelling increased reliance on cell phones for taking photos, storing itineraries, social network sharing, getting directions and web browsing can syphon off power more excessively than normal. As well as the simple missing photograph opportunities this could potentially leave you without adequate power to make an emergency call or being able to use a GPS app to return back to your accommodation. Bringing along a 10,000mAh portable charger to Paraguay lowers the risk as it means you can keep your smart phone charged without using a wall charger, especially when visiting a country with a lack of access to power and power outages in some areas.
  • Use at least a 10,000mAh power bank which can store enough electricity to power over three full cycles while a 20,000mAh portable charger should keep an average smart phone powered for almost a week depending on the model of phone and usage.
  • Providing that your laptop uses a USB-C charging port then packing a portable charger for a laptop marked with PD (power delivery) which supplies at least 20Wh can be used to extend the battery life of the laptop.
  • Be aware that some airlines won't let you take batteries on an aircraft with more than 100 Wh of power and must not be kept in the hold.
  • Consumer power banks aren't designed for use with high wattage items, but a rechargeable hair dryer or rechargeable cordless flat iron can be used for travelling to locations with power cuts and limited access to electricity such as Paraguay.    [4] [4] [12] [13] [14] [15] [AD]

Do solar chargers work in Paraguay?

Solar backpacks are ideal for hot climates

Do solar chargers work in Paraguay?

The sunshine in Paraguay should be adequate enough to recharge solar power bank dependably, however it needs to be left in strong sunshine in order to provide suitable power for a single charge. This could prove inconvenient to constantly unpack a solar power bank then wait for it to recharge in sunny spells.

  • The larger durable solar panels found on a solar backpack give the bag the ability to create more electricity within a shorter period of time, making them ideal for the climate in Paraguay.
  • Phones that have been plugged directly into a USB charging port of a solar backpack will trickle charge the battery during sunny spells in Paraguay, however might be inconvenient to have a phone continually connected to the bag should it be needed constantly. A solar powered bag is usually exposed to daylight therefore can be powering up a power bank during the day, unlike a handheld solar power bank that requires unpacking and facing sunlight.
  • Although the climate in Paraguay is suitable, a bag should have a solar cell efficiency of at least 22%, be able to generate a minimum of 6 watts of power and be used with a 10,000mAH power bank or stronger. The durable and flexible solar cells used in solar powered bags have been designed to survive scratches and bending, unlike normal firm solar cells. Solar bags are available in backpack, laptop messenger and rucksack styles making them perfect for travel, work and domestic use.  [16] [17] [AD]

Paraguay chargers

What is a USB travel power charger?

A USB travel charger is a dual voltage charger with interchangeable plugs and multiple USB ports, suitable for charging multiple USB powered devices when travelling abroad.

What USB charger do I need for Paraguay?

When travelling with more than one device and visiting multiple countries then the best travel charger for Paraguay to buy is a multiple USB port adapter which includes swappable plugs like a 4 port USB travel charger. As these types of chargers come with interchangeable pins and handle 100 volts to 240 volts it makes them ideal for multiple countries in Asia, North America, Europe and Africa just by changing the included plugs. If your model of device can support Fast Charge (not all USB devices will) then you will benefit from much quicker charging times with one of these types of USB travel adapters plus compatibility with more power hungry devices. Unlike other adapters having a 4 port adapter means you can power multiple devices at the same time without needing to bring individual power chargers for your trip to Paraguay or using up additional wall sockets. By only bringing a single lightweight USB travel charger will also keep the overall size down, making it perfect to fold up and store in hand luggage. Because of their space saving versatility these types of travel adapters can be used when back at home as well as abroad so when you’re not travelling they can be used overnight charging multiple tablets and smartphones with only a single wall outlet.

We suggest buying this type of versatile travel adapter at your preferred electronics retailer. The multipurpose travel adapter illustrated is the 4 Port USB Wall Charger which has been successfully tested for charging multiple USB devices in numerous different countries with perfect reliably. [6] [AD]

What USB charger do I need for Paraguay?

Why use a travel USB charger for Paraguay?

  • Most travel USB chargers include 4 or more USB charger ports, this means that you should only need to bring a single charger to charge multiple devices. It helps reduce the weightand size of your luggage by only bringing one USB wall charger instead of bringing several different USB power chargers.
  • Travel USB power chargers will include swappable plug heads for different countries. This is perfect when visiting multiple countries across South America which are likely to use a different standard to Paraguay.
  • A good USB power charger is rugged, lightweight and compact; ideal for rigors of travel rather than risking packing a domestic charger which could be hard to repair in Paraguay.
  • USB chargers can accept both the 220 volts used in Paraguay power outlets and different voltage standards across the world.
  • It is possible that hotel rooms or accommodation in Paraguay might only have one power outlet, by bringing a travel charger with multiple USB ports means you can share out the single power supply with all your devices instead of waiting to charge one device at a time.
  • Because of their flexible nature they take the uncertainty out of visiting any unknown destination as they are guaranteed to work practically anywhere on the planet.
  • Power outlets in airports can be scant and demand for charging multiple devices during departure can be high, therefore a USB travel charger with multiple ports and the ability to charge quickly is ideal.
  • Sometimes the power grid in a country can be unstable, a good quality travel charger allows for unexpected fluctuations and will prevent damage to any devices attached to it. Attempting to repair an overloaded smartphone in Paraguay might prove to be difficult and costly.
  • Higher priced USB chargers should also include a power outlet strip to allow you to use low powered domestic appliances such as laptops, but please note these are unsuitable for high wattage domestic such as hair dryers or clothes irons. For further information please see our guide on using travel appliances with a Paraguayan power outlet for helpful guidelines on the best power adapter to use with a Paraguayan power outlet for high powered devices.
  • Some tablets and mobile phones could require more than the usual 500 mA produced from a normal 5 volt USB adapter to charge or provide fast charge. Ensure that the USB power adapter can support fast charging incase some of your devices draw extra power.
  • On returning home travel USB power chargers can still be useful by charging multiple cell phones and tablets every day using a single power outlet. [6] [AD]

Power converters for Paraguay

What is a power converter?

Power converters enable you to use a 100, 110 or 120 volt electric device with a 220 volt Paraguayan power outlet.

Also known as: electrical converter, electrical transformer, voltage converter, power transformer or voltage transformer.

What is the difference between a power converter and a plug adapter for Paraguay?

An expensive and bulky power converter will convert a 220 volt Paraguayan power outlet to work with a non-220 volt appliance, whereas a cheaper and smaller power adapter (or plug adapter) will change the shape of the plug on your device to slot into a power outlet in Paraguay. [10] [AD]

Do I need a power converter for Paraguay?

When you are visiting Paraguay from a different country please ensure that the device will accept a 220 volt power supply.

  • You need a step down power converter if you are visiting Paraguay from a country that uses 100-120 volts and your appliance is incompatible with 220 volts. See the WikiConnections list of world power outlets page to discover which voltage your country uses.
  • You shouldn't need a power converter if you are already using either a single voltage device that works with 220 volts or one that supports dual voltage.
  • Typically, devices which are designed to work with a lower voltage such as 120 volts and then used in a 220 volt outlet run the risk of damage to your device, an electrical fire hazard or a blown fuse.
  • You shouldn't need a power converter if you wish to power a smaller electrical device such as a tablet as these are normally dual voltage and designed for international use, however you should always always check the device for dual voltage support prior to your journey.
  • If supplying power to high wattage appliances or generate heat (such as hair dryers or curling irons) then you will need to use a bulkier higher wattage heavy duty power converter which allows it to be used with a 220 volt Paraguayan power outlet.
  • It could be more cost effective to purchase a smaller robust dual voltage travel appliance than paying for a heavier high wattage power converter to Paraguay in order to use your existing domestic appliance.
  • For more information read these guides on travelling with clothes irons, curling irons, hair straighteners and blow dryers in Paraguay , along with recommendations for some affordable dual voltage alternatives.  [10] [18] [AD]

Will I need a power converter if I'm travelling to Paraguay from America?

What kind of converter do I need for Paraguay?

If you need to use any 100, 110 or 120 volt appliance in Paraguay you will need to buy a step down power converter[10] [AD]

What is the difference between a power converter and a transformer?

Voltage converter

What is the difference between a power converter and a transformer?

Converters and transformers are both used to change one voltage to another, but this ambiguity can cause confusion as their purposes are different:

  • Power converters are designed for simple electrical appliances which typically generate heat or use motors such as clothes irons, shavers or hair dryers. Transformers are designed for more complex electronic items such as televisions or games consoles.
  • Buying a power converter is cheaper than buying a power transformer.
  • Power transformers are larger and heavier making them more suited for permanent residential use; for example an expat wishing to use an imported television would need to use a transformer for this purpose.
  • Power converters are more suitable for travellers wishing to bring domestic appliances abroad such as hair dryers or flat irons. However, it is more practical and cost effective to purchase a dual voltage appliance designed for travel rather than a heavier power converter.
  • Power converters are suitable for 2 pin ungrounded appliances, it could be harder to find a converter if you want to use a grounded 3 pin appliance.
  • Transformers can be used constantly however it is recommended that converters are used for no longer than a couple of hours at a time.
  • Shops may sell transformers under the name of converters, for the purposes this guide we will be referring to both converters and transformers as converters.

How to convert 220 volts to 110 volts

  1. Use a step down power converter to allow you to use a 110 or 120 volt appliance with a 220 volt Paraguayan power outlet.
  2. If the power converter doesn't include the correct shaped plug then it will also be necessary to plug in the power cord from the power converter into a power adapter for Paraguay before plugging that into a Paraguayan power outlet.
  3. Some power converters include the ability to perform both step up and step down voltage conversions, therefore it may be necessary to manually switch the converter to output the voltage to the 110-120 volt range.
  4. Plug your appliance into the converter and turn the power on, your 110-120 volt appliance can now be used with a 220 volt Paraguayan power outlet. [10] [AD]

What voltage is used in Paraguay?

How can you tell if you have a single voltage or dual voltage device?

Single voltage hair dryer

How can you tell if you have a single voltage or dual voltage device?

The easiest method to tell if your device is dual or single voltage is to check for numbers printed on the charger, or on the device itself, typically on the rear or near to where the power cord goes. This location will vary depending on the make or model of your device, it should also state on the box.

  • Single voltage devices might say a specific number - such as 220V.
  • Single voltage devices could also have a small voltage range (around 20 volts) with a dash to accomodate small voltage fluctuations - such as 100-120V.
  • Dual voltage devices will say a larger range separated with a slash - such as 100/240V.

See the power adapter substantions section for more information on how we compared travel adapters.

What type of adapter do you need for Paraguay?

Which type of power adapter will you need for Paraguay?

The plug adapter or power converter which is best to use in Paraguay is dependant on various requirements, so before choosing the right one to use we recommend using this checklist:

How many electrical devices are you packing for Paraguay?

How many electrical devices are you bringing

How many electrical devices are you packing for Paraguay?

  • Add up how many devices and applicances you want to pack for Paraguay (such as cell phones, laptops, eReaders, curling irons or hair straighteners).
    • Take into account that you might own more electrical items at a later date. Do you intend on buying a new tablet computer next year for example?
    • There are an increasing number of USB powered rechargeable electronics such as electric shavers which utilise USB for a power source. Therefore next time you have to buy a new device it could use a USB adapter so ensure your travel adapter has enough spare ports to power these as well.
  • Will you be travelling with a partner who will need to recharge their iPads as well?

Will you only be planning on charging USB devices in Paraguay?

What types of devices do you want to use?

A USB powered phone

What types of devices do you want to use?

  • There are three types of electrical devices or appliances:
    • Low wattage electronic devices which can be plugged into an electrical outlet - for example a laptop.
    • High wattage electrical appliances which plug into an electrical outlet - for example curling irons and hair dryers.
    • USB powered electrical devices which charge using a USB port - for example phones and tablet computers.
  • Should you only need to take just USB powered devices then you'll find that a simple travel USB charger is ideal as you will only have to pack that single charger rather than needing to pack lots of domestic chargers.
  • Travel power strips are built for powering and voltage conversion for many low wattage devices, but won't work with high wattage appliances that require voltage conversion.

Will your appliances only work with a 220 volt power outlet?

Do you intend on visiting countries other than Paraguay?

  • Most single plug adapters will only operate in the one country that they are designed for, so if you wish to visit multiple countries you'll need to bring along additional power adapters which in turn adds to the number of adapters you'll have to bring.
  • On the other hand travel USB wall chargers and universal travel adapters are designed for travelling to more than one country becuase of their interchangeable head system.

How many Paraguayan power outlets will be available?

  • Your hotel may offer only a single power outlet, this will be an issue if charging the batteries of multiple items such as cell phones, tablet computers and cameras overnight as you will only be able to recharge one device at a time then need to swap.
  • If you need to recharge more than one device simultaneously then we recommend using a USB wall charger or a travel power strip that can charge multiple USB ports or power outlets. [7] [AD]

Are you intending on visiting anywhere abroad in the future?

How much can you afford?

  • A basic power adapter will power one device from a Paraguayan power outlet (provided that works with 220 volts or it is dual voltage) but investing in a small amount more will allow you to charge more than one device at once and be able to bring them to multiple countries.

How long does it take to travel to Paraguay?

  • With extended journeys it's worth thinking about bringing an airport-friendly charger that works in different outlet types, one which is light enough to pack in carry-on luggage and can top up tablets and phones just prior to a lengthy flight.
  • As not all airports actually have power outlets available think about bringing a portable charger for recharging on the go. After arriving in Paraguay you could need to use your cell phone to make calls, reading emails , using mapping to find your accomodation or viewing your itinerary; so please ensure that your phone has ample charge remaining. [4] [AD]

Will you always have good access to electricity?

  • Voltage in Paraguay could sporadically fluctuate and this can potentially cause damage to your devices, use a power adapter which has surge protection such as a travel power strip.
  • Because Paraguay has power cuts and having partial access to power you might find that whatever power charger you bring to the country doesn't work anyway. Prepare for power cuts and limited electrical access in Paraguay by bringing a portable charger and a solar backpack.  [4] [4] [16] [AD]
