US to India power adapters - do you need a power adapter in India?

Indian power outlet

What adapter do I need for India?

You'll need to pack a Type D plug adapter for India if the plug you intend on using doesn't fit in an Indian power outlet.

The type of power adapter, power converter or charger that's needed when visiting India will all depend on the voltage and type of device that you're attempting to power with an Indian power outlet. If you don't know what voltage your device uses then read the section below about how can you tell if you have a dual voltage device before going any further.

  • Some areas in India do not have access to electricity and suffer from power cuts, it is advised to pack a power bank if you wish to recharge your cellphone whilst in an area without access to power or during a power outage.
  • If you are visiting India from the US then you will need to bring a suitable plug adapter to fit a US plug into an Indian power outlet. As the voltage is different in India use a power converter if your device or appliance isn't dual voltage and ensure that it can work with a 50hz power outlet.
  • If your device is 230 volts or is dual voltage and the plug can fit in an Indian power outlet then it will work in India.
  • If your device can run on 230 volts or is dual voltage but the plug won't fit in an Indian power outlet you'll need to bring a suitable plug adapter for India such a Type D plug adapter. A plug adapter for India (or power adapter) is designed to change the shape of the plug on your device to fit into a plug outlet found in India, but won't convert the voltage from 230 volts to another voltage.
  • If your device doesn't run on 230 volts and isn't dual voltage you'll also need a power converter for India to convert the voltage from 230 volts to the correct voltage on your device. You'll still need to bring a suitable plug adapter for India if your power converter doesn't use the correct Type D plug adapter.
  • If you simply want to power one or more USB devices such as a tablet or cell phone then a USB travel power adapter will be more suited and it should be dual voltage, however ensure that you bring one which includes a Type D plug adapter otherwise you'll still need to bring along a suitable plug adapter for India[3]

Warning: If your device won't handle 230 volts you run a risk of damage to your device, an electrical fire hazard or blowing a fuse. Before attempting to use your device in India read the instruction manual first to ensure safe operation.

India power adapters

Power adapters for India

If planning a trip to India it can be useful to know if you'll be able to charge any common devices like mobile phones and cameras when you arrive. By not knowing which power socket is being used you are more likely to bring the wrong charger, therefore needing to purchase a suitable power adaptor when you need to recharge. Various standards and plugs can all be daunting when planning on staying in a foreign country especially if you've never been there before. With only a handful of different types of standards being used throughout the world this guide tells you exactly what you'll need in advance to charge your electronics in India. This page contains links to step by step instructions showing you how to power your devices when you are travelling to India using the standard Type D, C or M 230 volt 50Hz wall outlets, please be aware that Type D power outlets are typically used by a majority of Indians. Power sockets are different from region to region therefore we recommend reading the power adapters page for a full list of regions and countries.

What is the best power adapter for India?

The best power adapter for India will be a Type D power adapter which is suitable for powering any 230 volt device or appliance. [3]

What is the best power adapter for India?

What is a power adapter for an Indian power outlet?

Power adapters are small and lightweight plastic adapters which permit an Indian power outlet to accept a power plug from a different country. [5]

What does a power adapter do?

A power adapter enables a visitor from a different location to use their electrical devices in India simply by changing the shape of the plug.

Do I need a plug adapter in India?

If the shape of the Indian power outlet isn't the same as the type of plug outlet in India then you will need a power adapter.

India

Do I need a plug adapter if I'm visiting India from America?

If you are visiting from America you will need to bring a power adapter for India as an American plug won't physically fit into an Indian power outlet, and because the voltage is much higher you will also need to use a power converter for India if your charger or appliance isn't dual voltage to prevent overheating or damage.

India

Will a power adapter change the voltage from an Indian power outlet?

A power adapter only adapts the shape of a plug to fit into a 230 volt Indian power outlet and can't convert to a different voltage. Should you need to safely use a 100, 110 or 120 volt device then you also need a step down power converter for India.

Where to buy a power adapter for India in the US

India to US power adapters will most likely be available in most major US International airports prior to departure, however the range of adapters might be limited to popular destinations. It is recommended to research the exact type of adapter required prior to shopping at the airport. Look in the travel accessories section of airport newsagents, electronic stores and pharmacists such as Hudson News or Brookstone, but expect to pay more than regular prices. Airports will be your last chance to buy a power adapter before departure, always check the returns policy to ensure you can easily exchange or refund a faulty or unsuitable product in an airside shop.

It will be more convenient and cheaper to buy the correct power adapter in advance of your trip. High street electrical stores such as Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Home Depot or Fry's normally sell a limited range of travel adapters to popular locations but for widest choice it is recommended to buy a power adapter online.

On arrival power adapters could be found in local electrical high street shops and drug stores, but always check the build quality first as safety standards might be different in a foreign country as this is important when dealing with electrical goods. Keep in mind that a shopping trip searching for power adapters in an unknown location might be impractical, especially as this needs to happen quickly before batteries run out.

Hotel receptions could have a power adapter for sale, hire or as a complimentary extra for guests; however, availability is normally limited and a hotel might not have the exact type required for your country. If in doubt, call ahead to the hotel first and request a reservation as it is unlikely that an adapter will be found in your room on arrival.

Travel Power Strips

A power strip with multiple USB ports

Travel Power Strips

Benefits of a travel power strip

  • A travel power strip is capable of powering several electronic appliances at once via a single plug socket, costing between $35 to $40.
  • Some models have voltage conversation for low wattage devices such as laptops. So therefore if the appliance isn't dual voltage it can still work with a Indian power outlet by using a travel power strip. This will make a travel power strip a cheap and lightweight substitute for a power converter.
  • Most power strips should include a number of USB charging ports.
  • The voltage from power outlets in certain countries could be unstable, a sudden surge in power will damage your delicate devices. There are some models that include a built in surge protector which will prevent your device from being overpowered by an unstable power grid.
  • When you get back home it will still be of use as a power strip and USB charger.
  • US and Canadian power strips include Type A, B, D, E/F, G, H, I, L and N plug adapters so should work in India.

Disadvantages of a travel power strip

  • The conversion on travel power strips won't work with high wattage appliances such as curling irons or hair dryers.
  • Due to the size of a travel power strip it might be too bulky for packing in hand luggage.
  • A travel power strip might be excessive if you only have a small number of appliances and devices to charge. [6]
Power Plug Adapters

An easy to use Type D plug adapter

Power Plug Adapters

Benefits of a power plug adapter

  • Light and small.
  • Cheap, with prices between $5 to $10.
  • Simple to operate.
  • Bringing a Type D plug adapter will be ideal for India.

Disadvantages of a power plug adapter

  • One plug adapter per plug - for every individual appliance you will also need to bring a separate power plug adapter.
  • Only changes the actual shape of the plug to fit in a Type D Indian power outlet and doesn't modify the actual voltage. If your appliance doesn't work with a 230 volt outlet and isn't dual voltage then you will still need to bring a separate voltage converter.
  • Hotel rooms might only have a single power outlet, so you will only be able to power a single device at a time.
  • Should you intend on visiting more than one country then you may need to pack multiple plug adapter types for other countries.
  • You'll also need to bring a separate domestic USB charger if you need to power any USB device. [3]
Travel USB Wall Chargers

A compact USB travel wall charger

Travel USB Wall Chargers

Benefits of a travel USB wall charger

  • Perfect when you only have to charge devices which use USB, for example tablet computers, cell phones or MP3 players.
  • Instead of bringing multiple domestic USB power chargers you will only need to pack one charger which costs roughly under $20.
  • Chargers come with interchangeable adapter heads which make them versatile in a large number of different locations. Interchangeable adapter heads are typically lightweight and small which makes them easy to pack.
  • Offers surge protection.
  • The charger could still be functional when you return to America.

Disadvantages of a travel USB wall charger

  • The interchangeable heads don't include one which is compatible with an Indian power outlet - therefore you'll still need to bring a separate power adapter for an Indian power outlet.
  • Because they only have USB outputs you can't power any appliances, only USB powered devices. [7]
Universal Travel Power Adapters

Universal adapters work in over 150 countries

Universal Travel Power Adapters

Benefits of a universal travel power adapter

  • Fairly easy to use.
  • All in one compact design. Both small and lightweight, around $15.
  • There are some universal travel adapters that include a built in surge protector, this will prevent your device from being overpowered by an unstable power grid.
  • The pins retract so won't get caught against other items in your baggage.
  • When you return to America it will still be of use as a USB charger.
  • Some universal travel adapters will include USB charging ports.

Disadvantages of a universal travel power adapter

  • Although most universal travel adapters are designed to operate in over 150 different countries the pins don't change shape to fit in an Indian power outlet. So you will need to bring a separate power plug adapter if you want to use universal travel adapter to benefit from surge protection and powering multiple devices from one outlet.
  • Can't be used with any high powered appliances - for example hair straighteners, vacuum cleaners, kettles, curling irons or hair dryers.
  • They don't have a voltage converter meaning they're not suitable for non-230 volt appliances.
  • Not fully universal - some adapters might not cover certain countries with less popular outlet types.
  • The internal moving parts such as pins and shutters might be fragile on some models which could make them prone to breaking whilst abroad.
  • Universal adapters only charge one plug. [8]
Plug Adapter Sets

A comprehensive plug adapter set

Plug Adapter Sets

Benefits of a plug adapter set

  • As prices are roughly between $15 to $20 a power adapter set typically works out more economical than purchasing multiple individual power plug adapter types costing almost $10 each.
  • Covers all eventualities and not just an Indian power outlet.
  • If you are visiting different countries a plug adapter set is perfect.
  • Set includes Type A, B, C, D, E/F, G, H, I, J, L, M and N plugs so should work in India.

Disadvantages of a plug adapter set

  • Will involve some planning; before any trip you will need to decide which power adapters they'll need, if you don't know every country you'll be visiting you'll need to bring each adapter type along.
  • Lots individual items to bring with you.
  • All remaining plug adapters will be useless.
  • Not every power adapter types are typically included in each set (especially rarer ones), so ensure that your plug adapter set includes one which is compatible in India.
  • Each adapter only changes the shape of the plug to fit in an Indian power outlet but not the actual voltage. [9]
Voltage Converters

A voltage converter has surge protection

Voltage Converters

Benefits of a voltage converter

Disadvantages of a voltage converter

  • A voltage converter only converts the 230 volts in India and won't change the actual shape of the plug to fit in a Indian power outlet, therefore you will still need to bring the correct type of power adapter.
  • The typical size of voltage converters makes them unsuitable for carry-on baggage.
  • Useless when you return from India.
  • It's usually better value and more practical to buy a dual voltage travel appliance than to purchase an expensive power converter just to power your existing single voltage appliance in India.
  • Expensive; between $110 to $120.
  • If you plan on travelling from America and visiting India you will require one as the voltage from an Indian power outlet is 230 volts.

India power outlets and plug sockets

What plug sockets are used in India?

Type C, D and M power outlets

What plug sockets are used in India?

There are three types of power supply used in India, these are type D, C and M with the primary power outlets being type D:

  • Plug Type C - The plug outlet (known as the type C socket or Europlug) is recognised by 2 holes adjacent to each other for live and neutral pins.
  • Plug Type D - The wall outlet, technically known as a type D power outlet, looks like 3 circular holes forming a triangular configuration for live, neutral and ground pins.
  • Plug Type M - You can identify this power socket by three large circular holes in a triangular pattern for live, neutral and ground. [3]

Do US plugs work in India?

No; an American plug won't work in India because it can't fit in an Indian power outlet without the use of a power adapter. The voltage is different therefore use a power converter if your device isn't dual voltage and check that your appliance is compatible with a 50hz power outlet.

India

What is the frequency used with an Indian power outlet?

The frequency of the current found in an Indian power outlet is 50Hz. [11]

India
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mains_electricity_by_country

Are Indian power outlets the same as the US?

American plugs won't fit in an Indian power outlet so you will need to bring a power adapter for India. Both the voltage and frequency are different so if your charger or appliance isn't dual voltage please use a power converter for India and check that it works with a 50hz supply.

India

Is the voltage in India the same as the US?

The voltage in India is 230 volts, however 120 volts is used in the US. If your American appliance or charger doesn't support dual voltage then you should use a power converter for India which can lower the voltage from 230 volts to 120 volts.

India

How do I use a 110 volt appliance in India?

Use a step down power converter if you wish to use either a 110 volt or 120 volt appliance in India.

India

Are there power outages in India?

India suffers power outages several times every month and with this high level of unpredictability it is recommended to pack accordingly.

India

What is access to electrical power like in India?

In India almost a quarter of the population of the country doesn't have access to electricity.

India

Should I pack a power bank for India?

Because electrical power isn't available in all areas of India along with potential power cuts, visitors should bring alternate charging solutions if they want to continue using devices such as cellphones or eReaders.

  • During a trip to India increased use of mobile phones for taking pictures, storing calendars, GPS, social network sharing and streaming videos will syphon off power excessively. As well as the inconvenience of missing photo opportunities a flat smart phone battery could potentially leave you in an unknown location without sufficient power to make emergency calls or being able to use a satellite navigation app to return to your hotel or accommodation. By packing a 10,000mAh portable charger lowers that risk as it allows you to power up your cell phone on the move, especially when visiting a country with a lack of access to power and power cuts in some areas.
  • We recommend using at least a 10,000mAh portable charger which will store enough electricity to power over 3 full days of mobile phone use while a 20,000mAh power bank should keep an average cell phone powered for almost a week.
  • Providing that your laptop uses a USB-C charging port then a portable charger for a laptop marked with PD (power delivery) that supplies at least 20Wh can be used to recharge that laptop when travelling to India.
  • However be aware that some airlines prohibit portable chargers on an aircraft with more than 100Wh of power and must not be kept in the hold so we recommended checking ahead with the carrier.
  • Consumer portable chargers aren't designed for use with high wattage items that generate heat, but a rechargeable hair dryer or gas hair straighteners are designed for travelling to areas with both power cuts and a lack of access to electricity such as India.    [12] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16]

Does a solar powered charger work in India?

Solar backpacks are ideal for hot climates

Does a solar powered charger work in India?

The sunlight in India will be adequate enough to charge solar power bank dependably, however it needs to be left in strong sunlight in order to produce enough energy for a single charge cycle. This might prove inconvenient to constantly unpack a solar power bank then wait for it to recharge in a sunny area.

  • Instead, the larger cells used on a solar backpack give the bag the ability to create more electricity within a faster period of time, meaning they should perform well in India.
  • A phone that has been directly plugged into a USB port of a solar backpack can trickle charge the power during sunny spells in India, but this could be inconvenient to have the phone constantly connected to the bag during the day should it be used frequently. Unlike a handheld solar power bank that requires unpacking facing sunlight, a solar powered backpack is constantly exposed to light so will be topping up a power bank during the day.
  • Even though the climate in India is suitable, a bag should ideally have a solar cell efficiency of 22% or greater, can generate at least 6 watts of power and be used with a compatible power bank of 10,000mAH or stronger.
  • Unlike normal firm solar cells, the flexible and durable solar panels used in solar powered bags are built to endure scratches and bending. They are found in rucksack, backpack and laptop messenger styles which makes them ideal for domestic, travel and work use.  [4] [17] [18]

India chargers

What is a USB travel power charger?

A USB travel charger is a dual voltage charger with interchangeable plugs and multiple USB ports, suitable for charging multiple USB powered devices when travelling abroad.

What USB charger do I need for India?

When travelling with more than one device then the best travel adapter for India to buy is a multiple USB charger which includes compatible plugs such as a 4 port USB travel charger. There are three types of power outlets in India (types D, C and M) and bringing this will ensure that you are covered for type C. Because these types of chargers come with interchangeable pins and handle from 100 volts - 240 volts will mean that you can travel to multiple countries in Asia, North America, Europe and Africa just by switching the heads over. If your device supports Fast Charge (not all USB devices will) then you will benefit from quicker recharging times by using one of these travel adapters plus additional compatibility with certain power demanding devices like tablets.

This will allow you to charge multiple devices simultaneously without needing to bring individual power adapters on your Indian trip or occupying additional wall sockets. By only packing a single international travel charger will help keep the overall size and weight down, making it perfect to fold up and store in hand luggage. Because of their space saving flexibility these types of travel chargers can be used back at home so when you're not travelling they can be used overnight charging multiple tablets, smartphones and e-readers without using up an additional power outlet.

For those travelling regularly we suggest buying an adaptable travel adapter similar to this online. The multipurpose travel charger illustrated is the 4 Port USB Wall Charger which has been tested successfully with multiple USB devices in numerous foreign countries around the world with perfect reliably. [7]

What USB charger do I need for India?

Why use a travel USB charger for India?

  • Typically travel USB chargers include multiple USB charger ports, this means that you should only need to bring one charger to charge multiple devices. Instead of bringing 4 separate power chargers you only need to pack one 4 port USB wall charger to power up to 4 devices, thereby reducing the size and weight of your baggage.
  • Travel USB chargers should include swappable plug heads for various countries thereby making them suitable if visiting other countries across Asia which are likely to use a different standard to India.
  • Good USB travel chargers are rugged, lightweight and compact; ideal for rigors of travel instead of than risking bringing along a domestic charger which might be impossible to repair or replace in India.
  • USB chargers will accept both the 230 volts used in India power outlets plus different voltage standards in other countries.
  • There is a chance that some hotel bedrooms or accommodation in India might only have one power outlet, by using a travel charger with multiple USB ports means you can share the single wall outlet with family or other traveler instead of waiting to charge each device one by one.
  • Because of their versatile nature a travel USB charger takes the worry out of travelling to any unknown country as they are guaranteed to work practically anywhere on the planet.
  • Power outlets in airports are often in short supply and the demand for charging multiple cell phones before a flight can be high, therefore a USB travel charger with multiple ports and the ability to charge quickly is perfect.
  • Sometimes the power grid in a country can be unstable, a travel USB charger allows for unexpected surges and prevents damage to any devices attached to it. Attempting to repair an overloaded smartphone in India could prove to be problematic and expensive.
  • Premium USB travel chargers also incorporate a power outlet strip to allow you to power low wattage devices such as laptops, however these are unsuitable for high wattage domestic such as hair dryers or clothes irons. See the section on using travel appliances in India for useful guidelines and advice on the best power adapter for a high wattage devices with an Indian power outlet.
  • Certain cell phones could pull more than the normal 500 milliamps produced from a standard 5 volt USB adapter to charge or provide fast charge. More expensive USB chargers will support fast charging should any of your devices require additional power.
  • When back at home travel USB chargers can still be used by charging multiple cell phones every night using only one power outlet. [7]

What is the best USB charger for India?

A 4 port USB travel charger is the most compact option for travellers from around the world who only have USB devices, but for those also wishing to use their domestic plugs these power strips provide larger but more versatile solutions. All 3 power adapters offer surge protection which is crucial for visitors of counties with unreliable power grids. These travel adapters come with interchangeable type C, I and G plugs covering both India and over 150 countries around the world:

  • BESTEK Portable International Travel Voltage Converter - The BESTEK international travel converter has 4 USB charging ports with 3 AC power outlets and is the best selling portable option for travellers originating from America visiting India.
  • ORICO Traveling Outlet Surge Protector Power Strip - Similarly having 4 USB ports but only 2 AC power outlets the travel adapter from Orico is also aimed at travellers from North America using type B plugs and gives almost the same set of features as the BESTEK with only one less AC outlet at almost half the price.
  • BESTEK International USB Travel Power Strip - This power strip has just 2 AC outlets but offers a generous 5 USB charging ports. This versatile power strip is compatible with both American plugs and popular plug types A, D,E/F, G, H, I, L and N making it ideal for a majority of travellers from around the world visiting India. [7]

Power converters for India

What does a power converter for India do?

A power converter enables travellers to use a 100-120 volt electrical appliance with a 230 volt Indian power outlet.

Also known as: electrical converter, electrical transformer, voltage converter, power transformer or voltage transformer.

What is the difference between a plug adapter and a power converter?

A heavy and expensive power converter will transform the voltage of 230 volts from an Indian power outlet to work with a non-230 volt appliance, however a smaller and more lightweight power adapter (or plug adapter) will change the shape of the plug on your appliance to slot into a power outlet found in India. [19]

Do I need a power converter for India?

If you are visiting India from a different region please make sure your device can accept a 230 volt power supply.

  • A step down power converter is needed if you are travelling from a country that uses 100-120 volts and your appliance is incompatible with 230 volts. See our world power outlets page to see which voltage your country uses.
  • You don't need a power converter if you are already using either a 230 volt device or one that is dual voltage.
  • Devices which are designed for a lower voltage such as 120 volts and used with 230 volts run the potential risk of an electrical fire hazard, blowing a fuse or damage to your device.
  • You shouldn't need a power converter if you need to charge a smaller electrical device such as a mobile phone as these are typically dual voltage and designed for international use, however you should always check the device for dual voltage support prior to your journey.
  • When powering appliances which draw more power or generate heat (for example clothes irons and hair straighteners) then you will need to use a bulkier higher wattage heavy duty power converter.
  • It should be more cost effective to purchase a smaller robust dual voltage travel appliance than paying for a much heavier high wattage power converter simply to use your existing domestic appliance.
  • Read our comprehensive travel guides on travelling with clothes irons, curling wands, flat irons and hair dryers with an Indian power outlet , along with recommendations for affordable dual voltage alternatives.  [10] [20]

Will I need a power converter if I'm visiting India from the US?

The 230 volts found in a plug outlet in India is different to a 110 volt US supply so bring a step down power converter if your charger or appliance isn't dual voltage. [10]

What kind of converter do I need for India?

You need to use a step down power converter in order to use any 100, 110 or 120 volt appliance in India. [10]

What is the difference between a power transformer and a power converter?

Voltage converter

What is the difference between a power transformer and a power converter?

Converters and transformers are both used to change one voltage to another, but this ambiguity can cause confusion as their purposes are different:

  • Power converters are designed for simple electrical appliances which typically generate heat or use motors such as clothes irons, shavers or hair dryers. Transformers are designed for more complex electronic items such as televisions or games consoles.
  • Buying a power converter is cheaper than buying a power transformer.
  • Power transformers are larger and heavier making them more suited for permanent residential use; for example an expat wishing to use an imported television would need to use a transformer for this purpose.
  • Power converters are more suitable for travellers wishing to bring domestic appliances abroad such as hair dryers or flat irons. However, it is more practical and cost effective to purchase a dual voltage appliance designed for travel rather than a heavier power converter.
  • Power converters are suitable for 2 pin ungrounded appliances, it could be harder to find a converter if you want to use a grounded 3 pin appliance.
  • Transformers can be used constantly however it is recommended that converters are used for no longer than a couple of hours at a time.
  • Shops may sell transformers under the name of converters, for the purposes this guide we will be referring to both converters and transformers as converters.

What voltage does India use?

India uses 230 volts in their standard power outlets. [2]

How to convert 230 volts to 110 volts

  1. Use a step down power converter to allow you to use a 110 or 120 volt appliance with an 230 volt Indian power outlet.
  2. If the power converter doesn't include the correct shaped plug then it will also be necessary to plug in the power cord from the power converter into a power adapter for India before plugging that into an Indian power outlet.
  3. Some power converters include the ability to perform both step up and step down voltage conversions, therefore it may be necessary to manually switch the converter to output the voltage to the 110-120 volt range.
  4. Plug your appliance into the converter and turn the power on, your 110-120 volt appliance can now be used with an 230 volt Indian power outlet. [10]
Is my device single voltage or dual voltage?

Dual voltage hair dryer

Is my device single voltage or dual voltage?

A simple method to tell if your appliance is dual voltage is to check for either a sticker or numbers printed on the existing charger, or on the unit itself, typically near to where the power cord plugs into. This location might vary depending on the make or model of your device, it could also state in the instruction manual or on the box.

  • Single voltage devices could say a specific number - such as 120V.
  • Single voltage devices could also have a small voltage range (around 20 volts) with a dash to accomodate small voltage fluctuations - such as 100-120V.
  • Dual voltage devices will normally say a larger voltage range separated with a slash - such as 110/240V.

  • List all the items you'll need to bring to India (such as tablets, laptops, phones, eReaders, curling irons or hair dryers).
    • Remember to allow for more electrical devices at a later date. Are you thinking about buying a new laptop computer soon?
    • There are a growing number of rechargeable electronics such as electric shavers which use a USB port as their power charging source, the next time you buy a new device it could use a USB adapter so please ensure your travel adapter has enough spare ports to support these additional items also.
  • Are you bringing a partner to India who will need to charge their devices too?

What types of electrical devices do you need to use with an Indian power outlet?

  • There are 3 different types of electrical items:
    • Low wattage electronic devices which plug into an electrical outlet - for example laptops or cameras.
    • High wattage appliances which can be plugged into an electrical outlet - for example hair dryers or curling irons.
    • USB devices which plug into a USB port - for example phones and tablets.
  • When you only intend to bring along just USB powered devices to India then a simple travel USB wall charger is ideal as you will only have to bring that single lightweight charger rather than packing numerous domestic chargers.
  • A travel power strip is designed for providing power and voltage conversion for many low wattage devices (such as a laptop), however unsuitable for high wattage appliances (such as hairdryers) that require voltage conversion and could potentially overload the power strip.

How many power outlets will be available when you get to India?

  • A hotel may have only one power outlet on the wall. This will present an issue if recharging the batteries of multiple electronic devices such as cell phones, tablet computers and laptops overnight as you'll only be able to charge one device at a time.
  • If you wish to charge multiple devices at the same time then we recommend using a travel power strip or travel USB wall charger which can power multiple USB ports or outlets. [6]

Are you only planning on charging USB devices?

  • Should you only plan on packing USB electronics such as phones and tablets then it is recommended to just pack a travel USB wall charger.
  • If you only use a simple power plug adapter then you will still need to pack the USB power charger that came with your device too. [7]

Will your devices and appliances only work with 230 volt power outlets?

Do you intend on visiting anywhere abroad in the future?

Is India the only location you plan on visiting?

How much can you afford?

  • A cheap power adapter starts from around under $10 which powers only one device in India (providing that it is dual voltage or is compatible with 230 volts) but investing in roughly between $15 to $20 allows you to power multiple devices at once and bring them to various countries.

Will you always have reliable access to electrical power?

  • The electricity in India might sporadically fluctuate and this can cause damage to your devices, you will need to look for an adapter which offers built in surge protection such as a travel power strip.
  • Due to India suffering from power outages or having limited access to power in some areas you might find that whichever power charger you bring doesn't work anyway. Prepare for power cuts and areas of limited electricity by bringing a solar backpack or portable charger.  [4] [4] [17]

Are you flying long haul to get to India?

  • If you are embarking on an extended flight to get to India think about a convenient airport-suitable charger that works in different power outlet types, one which can be carried in hand luggage and can be used to top up tablets and phones.
  • Because not all airlines have power outlets available we recommend using a travel portable charger which will recharge on the go. When you land in India you may need to use a cellphone for making a call, using mapping or reading itineraries; so please make sure that your phone has enough battery power remaining. [4]
